Lesson 43 of 96 Sleep

Warm Water and Morning Sequence

Add another element to your morning routine.

Warm Water First Thing

Before coffee, before food, before phone:

  • Glass of warm or room temperature water
  • Sit while drinking if possible
  • Be present with it briefly

Why warm water?

Hydration: You haven’t had water in 7-8 hours. You wake dehydrated. Water first addresses this.

Digestion: Warm water wakes up the digestive system gently. Cold water can shock it.

Intentionality: Making warm water a deliberate first action creates an intentional start. You’re not reacting (to phone, to thoughts); you’re acting (preparing, consuming).

The Basic Morning Sequence

You’re now building a morning sequence:

  1. Wake
  2. Warm water (while still in bed or right after rising)
  3. Morning light - outside or at window (5-10 min)
  4. THEN phone, THEN day

The phone is conspicuously last. Most people reach for phone first thing. This immediately puts you in reactive mode - responding to what others have sent, to notifications, to news. It starts the day from behind.

Water → Light → Day is an intentional sequence. You’re taking care of your body before engaging with the world.

Today’s Practice

Tomorrow morning:

  1. Wake
  2. Warm water (prepare the night before if helpful)
  3. Outside or window for light (5-10 min)
  4. THEN phone, THEN day

Phone is not touched until after steps 2 and 3.

Do this for tomorrow and the following day.
