Lesson 77 of 96 Facing What Is

The Multiplication Process

Now we learn a specific technique for handling stuck thoughts and images.

The Principle

The technique works by going the opposite direction from resistance. Instead of pushing the image away, you multiply it. Instead of resisting the thought, you copy it.

Why Multiplication Works

When you multiply an image - make copies and spread them around - several things happen:

1. You shift from victim to creator. You’re not being victimized by the image anymore. You’re actively doing something with it.

2. You overwhelm the mechanism. The thought loop runs by fixating attention on ONE instance. When you create many instances, the fixation can’t maintain itself.

3. You demonstrate control. By deliberately making copies, you prove to yourself that you have some control over the image.

4. You reduce resistance. You can’t resist and multiply at the same time. When resistance stops, the thought often loses its grip.

The Multiplication Process

  1. Close your eyes
  2. Notice what you’re looking at mentally - the thought, image, or scene that’s stuck
  3. Make mental copies of it
  4. Put copies in all directions around you - above, below, front, back, left, right
  5. Keep making copies until something shifts
  6. Alternatively: change the colors of the image repeatedly - red, blue, green, yellow
  7. Continue until the image dissolves, changes, or loses its grip

What Happens

Different things can happen:

  • The image dissolves. It fades, becomes unclear, stops presenting itself.
  • The image changes. It transforms into something else.
  • The intensity reduces. The image remains but doesn’t feel as urgent.
  • Nothing obvious. Sometimes the effect is delayed.

Today’s Practice

Think of something mildly stuck - a small worry, a repeating thought. Not the heaviest thing. Something moderate.

Close your eyes. See it. Notice what it looks like.

Now try the Multiplication Process:

Option A - Multiplication:

  • Make copies of the image
  • Put copies all around you in every direction
  • Keep making more copies
  • Continue until something shifts

Option B - Color Changing:

  • Change the image to red
  • Now blue
  • Now green
  • Now yellow
  • Keep cycling colors

Do this for 5-10 minutes or until something shifts.
