Understanding Thought Loops
Sometimes thoughts and images get stuck on repeat. The same worry, the same scene, the same memory plays over and over. We call these thought loops - mental patterns running automatically, beyond your control.
What Thought Loops Are
A thought loop is a thought, image, or mental sequence that runs on its own. You don’t choose to think it - it thinks itself. It repeats without your permission.
Common thought loops include:
Worry loops: “What if X happens? Then Y would happen. Then Z. What if X happens? Then Y…” The same sequence, over and over.
Replay loops: A scene from the past plays repeatedly. An embarrassing moment. A conflict. Something someone said.
Fantasy loops: An imagined scenario that keeps returning. Sometimes pleasant, sometimes anxious.
Anticipation loops: A future event that keeps playing in mental rehearsal. Usually with anxiety attached.
Why Thought Loops Persist
Thought loops persist partly through resistance:
- The thought arises
- You don’t want it - you try to push it away
- The pushing creates attention on the thought
- Attention feeds the thought - it returns
- You push harder
- It returns stronger
The resistance is part of the mechanism. “Just don’t think about it” requires identifying what you’re not-thinking about - which means you’re thinking about it.
The Other Mechanism: Incomplete Processing
Thought loops also persist when something is incompletely processed.
The embarrassing memory keeps playing because you haven’t fully confronted it. Some aspect remains unfaced. So it returns, offering another opportunity to process.
Thought loops are often the mind’s attempt to get you to confront something.
Today’s Practice
Notice thought loops as they occur. Don’t try to fix them - just identify them.
When a thought is stuck on repeat:
- Notice: “This is a thought loop”
- Notice your relationship to it: Are you resisting? Engaging? Avoiding?
- Just observe for now
