The 1/3 Rule and Eating Principles
Simple guidelines for how to eat.
The 1/3 Rule
A traditional guideline for portion:
- 1/3 solid food
- 1/3 liquid
- 1/3 empty (space for digestion)
In practice: don’t stuff yourself. Stop before completely full. Leave room.
When you fill the stomach completely, digestion struggles. The food can’t move and mix properly. Pressure builds. You feel heavy and uncomfortable.
Stopping at 2/3 full feels odd at first. You’re not stuffed, so you feel like you didn’t eat “enough.” But 20 minutes later, the food settles and you feel satisfied. Over time, you realize this is enough.
Other Principles
Sit to eat. Sitting signals to the body: it’s mealtime, prepare to digest. Standing or walking signals: we’re in motion, prioritize other functions.
No screens while eating. Screens capture attention. Without attention on food, the body doesn’t engage digestion fully. You also eat more because you’re not tracking satiety.
Chew thoroughly. Most people chew a few times and swallow. Try chewing until food is liquid before swallowing. This dramatically improves digestion.
Walk 100 slow steps after eating. Don’t immediately sit down or jump into demanding activity. A slow, gentle walk — roughly 100 steps — aids digestion. The mild movement helps food move through the stomach and stimulates digestive function. This is more useful than sitting still.
Today’s Practice
At your next meal, apply the 1/3 rule. Stop before completely full. Leave space.
Also sit, minimize distractions, and chew more thoroughly than usual.
Notice how this feels different from your typical eating.
