Network as Ongoing Practice
Everything decays without maintenance. Relationships especially.
The network and community work you’ve done in this unit needs to become a practice, not a project. Projects end. Practices continue. And your network’s value directly correlates with the ongoing attention you give it.
The Decay Problem
Relationships have a half-life. If you don’t invest in them, they weaken. Not dramatically, not overnight, but steadily. The colleague you talked to every week becomes someone you talk to every month, then every few months, then someone you used to know.
This happens to everyone. It’s not a character flaw. It’s entropy. Without energy input, systems run down.
The solution is deliberate, scheduled attention. Not spontaneous “I should reach out to people” intentions that never happen. Actual calendar time dedicated to network maintenance and development.
The Weekly Practice
Set aside 30 minutes per week for network development. Minimum. More is better, but 30 minutes is the floor.
Here’s what to do with that time:
Maintain. Reach out to one or two people you haven’t talked to recently. Not with an ask. Just to connect. Share something useful, ask how they’re doing, offer help with something. Keep the relationship active.
Develop. Take one step on a new relationship you’re building. Send the follow-up email. Share that resource you promised. Make the introduction you mentioned. Move one strategic relationship forward.
Contribute. Do something for your community. Post something valuable, answer someone’s question, share a resource, make a connection between members. Add value without being asked.
Map. Spend a few minutes updating your network map. New people to add? Relationships that have strengthened or weakened? Gaps that have opened or closed?
Thirty minutes. Four activities. One per week minimum, cycling through all four over the course of a month.
The Compound Effect
Network practice compounds. The returns aren’t linear — they’re exponential over time.
In month one, you’re just showing up. Reaching out, contributing, maintaining. It feels like effort without much return.
By month three, relationships have deepened. People know you’re consistent. They start thinking of you when opportunities arise. Introductions come unsolicited.
By month six, your network is genuinely different. Stronger, more strategic, more active. You’re embedded in communities that multiply your reach. People reach out to you.
By year one, your network is one of your most valuable assets. Not in a cold, calculated way. In the way that a garden you’ve tended for a year produces abundantly. You planted seeds, you watered them, and now they grow on their own.
But none of this happens without the weekly practice.
Today’s Practice
Establish your network practice right now.
First, schedule it. Pick a day and time each week. Put it on your calendar as a recurring 30-minute block. Don’t negotiate with yourself about it later. It’s scheduled. It happens.
Second, define your first session. What will you do this week? Which of the four activities: maintain, develop, contribute, or map?
Third, do it. Your first network practice session is now. Spend 30 minutes on one of the four activities.
The habit starts today. Not next week when things calm down. Things never calm down. The practice goes on the calendar and it stays there.
