Working Through Future Fears

You have your fear inventory. Now you’re going to work through the irrational ones. The fears that block expansion without protecting you from anything real.

Here’s the principle. Every irrational fear traces back to a decision. Something happened, it was difficult, and you decided something in response. “I’ll never put myself in that position again.” “People can’t be trusted.” “If I try big things, I’ll get hurt.” That decision was probably reasonable at the time. It’s not reasonable now, but it’s still running.

The work finds that decision and releases it.

How Fear Gets Installed

The sequence is simple. Difficult event. Pain or overwhelm during the event. Decision made in the middle of the pain. Decision becomes a rule that runs automatically.

The event might be ancient. Childhood, early career, first relationship that ended badly. The decision got made at a time when you had fewer resources, less capacity, less understanding. It was the best you could do with what you had.

But you’re not that person anymore. Your capacity has grown. Your resources have multiplied. Your understanding has deepened. The decision, though, stayed frozen in time. It’s still running the old rules with the old assessment, as if nothing has changed.

This work updates the system.

The Practice

Continue until the fear feels lighter or you have a realization. That’s the endpoint. Set a 45-minute timer as an upper bound, not a target. Find a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted. This is real work and it needs real space.

Pick the irrational fear that blocks your most important expansion. Start there.

Find the weight. Think about the feared scenario. Where do you feel it in your body? Chest tightening? Stomach clenching? Throat closing? Locate the physical sensation. That’s the fear’s footprint.

Find the decision. Ask yourself: when did I decide this was dangerous? What happened that made me conclude I couldn’t handle this kind of situation? Don’t force an answer. Let it surface. It might come as a memory, an image, a feeling, a sudden knowing. Trust what comes.

Find the moment. Once you have the general area, the event, the time period, look for the specific moment when the decision got made. There’s a point in the experience where you went from dealing with difficulty to deciding something about the future. “Never again.” “I can’t.” “It’s too dangerous.” Find that point.

Run the incident. Go back to the beginning of that experience. Walk through it from start to finish, as if watching a movie. Don’t skip the hard parts. Let yourself see it fully. Then go through again. And again. Each pass, the intensity should reduce slightly.

Release the decision. As you run through the incident, you’ll feel the moment where the decision lives. Stay with it. Let yourself see that the decision was a response to that specific situation, not an eternal truth. When the decision releases, and you’ll feel it when it does, something loosens, check your body. The weight should be reduced or gone.

Test it. Think about the expansion the fear was blocking. How does it feel now? Not terrifying anymore? More like a challenge than a catastrophe? That’s the shift.

What If It Doesn’t Release

Some fears don’t release in one session. The incident might be heavily loaded, or there might be multiple incidents layered on top of each other. If you’ve reached your 45-minute upper bound and the fear is reduced but not gone, stop for today. Come back to it. The work isn’t wasted. It’s incremental. Some fears take multiple sessions.

Don’t push past the point of diminishing returns. Work that goes too long becomes grinding, and grinding past a partial release is past-the-shift. It can reverse the gain you just made.

Today’s Practice

Continue until the fear feels lighter or you have a realization about it. Set a 45-minute timer as an upper bound. Do the work described above on your most significant irrational future fear.

After the session, write down what happened. What fear did you work on? What decision did you find? Did it release? How does the expansion feel now?

If you have energy and the first fear cleared cleanly, you can do a second one. But don’t rush. Quality counts more than quantity here.
