Overview

Neptune opposite Midheaven in synastry puts one person's natal Neptune at the far end of the other person's career axis, on the Imum Coeli, which is the lowest degree of the chart and the cusp of the fourth house. The Neptune person shapes the MC person's profession, reputation and sense of direction from underneath it, and the mechanism is solvent rather than pressure. Most practitioners allow 5 to 8 degrees of orb to an angle.

Two outcomes account for most of what shows up in practice. In the first, the Neptune person becomes the imaginative source the MC person's public work runs on, and the career acquires something it lacked before: a subject, an atmosphere, a reason that survives a bad quarter. The Western attribution of career to this axis comes from Ptolemy, who derives the quality of a person's action in Book IV of the Tetrabiblos from the star governing the culminating degree. Reinhold Ebertin, working the same point through midpoints in The Combination of Stellar Influences, characterises Neptune with the Midheaven in terms of uncertainty about one's own aims and an unusual exposure to being misled in professional life. Neither had two-chart synastry in view. Both descriptions transfer with little adjustment once the Neptune in question belongs to somebody else.

Attraction & Chemistry

For the MC person this rarely starts as desire. It starts as relief from being a function. A life organised around a tenth-house direction gets met as its output, by colleagues, clients, family and eventually by the person living it, and meeting someone who registers none of that arrives like air.
