Moon Opposite Midheaven

Overview

Moon opposite Midheaven in synastry means one person's natal Moon sits 180 degrees from the other person's Midheaven, which places it on the Imum Coeli, the lowest point of the chart and the cusp of the fourth house. Most practitioners allow 5 to 8 degrees of orb to an angle. The reading that follows from the geometry is narrow and specific: the Moon person shapes the MC person's career, reputation and public direction from underneath it, by occupying the domestic ground the public life stands on, not by appearing beside them in it.

The Midheaven and the Imum Coeli are two ends of one line. Medium Coeli and Imum Coeli name the degrees where the local meridian crosses the ecliptic above and below the horizon, so an aspect to either end is an aspect to the axis. There is no way to read this contact as a fourth-house story on its own. Any statement about what the Moon person does to the MC person's home is simultaneously a statement about the MC person's tenth house, and vice versa.

The Moon supplies the substance that lands there. Fluctuating need, appetite, the requirement for rest, the memory of having been looked after, the felt sense of what home is supposed to smell like. The fourth bhava, called bandhu bhava and sukha sthana, holds matru, the home, vehicles and inner contentment, and Chandra is the karaka for both matru and manas. In the shadbala scheme set out in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Chandra and Shukra gain digbala, directional strength, in the fourth, while Surya and Mangal gain theirs in the tenth. The ground that a Western opposition to the Midheaven lands on is the exact quarter where Vedic astrology rates the Moon at full directional power. One system files this contact under hard aspects. The other files the same territory as the Moon's strongest position by direction.

A caution attaches to this aspect that does not attach to its planet-to-planet siblings. The Midheaven advances a uniform 15 degrees of right ascension per hour, though its motion in ecliptic longitude runs unevenly, faster through some signs than others depending on the birth latitude. A birth time off by half an hour moves the MC by roughly seven degrees of longitude, which is enough to manufacture this opposition or erase it. The Moon covers about 13 degrees a day, half a degree an hour, so the Moon person's side of the contact tolerates a rounded birth time and the MC person's side does not. The whole reading rests on the accuracy of one recorded time.

Attraction & Chemistry

The pull here rarely reports itself as heat. The MC person's version of it is closer to relief. They are pushed by a tenth-house direction, whether that direction is a profession, a reputation, a calling or an obligation they inherited, and meeting someone whose Moon sits at the far end of that same axis registers as a counterweight arriving. Something has appeared at the bottom of the line they have been climbing.
