Overview

Mercury opposite North Node in synastry is a 180-degree contact between one person's Mercury and the other person's North Node, generally read within about five degrees. Because the nodes are two ends of one axis rather than two independent points, that same Mercury sits conjunct the Node person's South Node at the identical degree. The Mercury person's habits of speech and attention land on the end of the axis the Node person's chart describes as already finished.

Synastry software prints the north-node name because that's the point most tables list. Someone looking up the aspect arrives expecting growth-direction language and finds a comfort contact instead. The reading runs closer to the reverse of what the label promises, which is why this configuration gets misdiagnosed more often than the conjunction does.
