Mercury Conjunct Chiron

Overview

Mercury conjunct Chiron in synastry puts one person's Mercury on the other person's Chiron, within a few degrees, and the contact does all of its work through language. The Mercury person talks the way they have always talked. On the receiving side, certain sentences land on a place that has never had words fitted to it, and the result swings between relief and injury without much warning in between.

Chiron is the figure in Greek myth whose answer to an incurable injury was teaching. Pindar's third Pythian ode has him rearing Asclepius and training him in medicine; the same centaur, in the account Apollodorus preserves, carries an arrow wound made with Hydra venom that his own art cannot close, and eventually trades his immortality away to be free of it. Instruction is what he does with the part of himself that will not mend. Mercury is the faculty that moves information from one head to another. Mercury's daily motion runs from a standstill at its stations up to roughly two degrees, and Chiron creeps, so both positions hold steady across a whole day of guessing. The Mercury person's own condition moves the reading instead: retrograde at birth, combust in the Sun's glare, or in a sign it handles badly.
