Both eyes went sympathetically blind for weeks. That is the opening 9 — a career closure so sudden it forced a vow during recovery: if he regained his sight, he would not return to industry. He did regain it, and in September 1867 he set out on a thousand-mile walk from Indianapolis to the Gulf of Mexico.
