Pratyantardasha
Pratyantardasha is Vimshottari's third level, the sub-period inside an antardasha, lasting from about five days to seven months.
A pratyantardasha is the third level of subdivision in the Vimshottari dasha system: a sub-period inside an antardasha, which is itself a sub-period inside a mahadasha. Its length is the product of the three ruling grahas' dasha years divided by 120 twice, so the Shukra pratyantardasha inside the Shani antardasha of a Guru mahadasha runs 16 x 19 x 20 divided by 14,400 years, about 154 days.
The Sanskrit joins prati (each, in turn) to antara (interval), naming an interval taken in turn inside an interval. English translations render it sub-sub-period; software labels it pratyantar or PAD. Parashara carries the division five levels deep in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, with a chapter of results at each of the lower three: pratyantardasha in chapter 61, sukshmantardasha in chapter 62, prana dasha in chapter 63 of the R. Santhanam translation. One rule generates every level, so the sequence has no natural floor. It ends where a practitioner judges the birth time can no longer carry the arithmetic.
Chapter 51, verse 1 states the calculation for both sub-levels in a single sentence. To find an antardasha, multiply the dasha years of the two grahas together and divide by the total dasha years of all the grahas, which in Vimshottari is 120. To find a pratyantardasha, multiply that antardasha span by the dasha years of a third graha and divide by the same total again. Chapter 61, verse 1 repeats the second half of the rule and names the 120-year figure outright. Notice that Parashara phrases the divisor as the total of all dasha years rather than as 120, which is why the same procedure carries over to the conditional nakshatra dashas with their own totals.
Written with M for a graha's mahadasha allotment in years, the antardasha of B inside the mahadasha of A is M(A) x M(B) / 120, and the pratyantardasha of C inside that is M(A) x M(B) x M(C) / 14,400. The nine allotments are fixed by tradition: Ketu 7, Shukra 20, Surya 6, Chandra 10, Mangal 7, Rahu 18, Guru 16, Shani 19, Budha 17.
Worked through on a Guru mahadasha, the Shani antardasha inside it runs 16 x 19 / 120 = 2.5333 years. Classical reckoning writes that as 2 years, 6 months, 12 days at 12 months to the year and 30 days to the month; at 365.25 days to the year it comes to 925 days. The 13-day gap between those two readings of one span is a question this page returns to below. Dividing the 925 days among the nine grahas by the same rule:

Those nine add back to 925 days, because the allotments they are built from add to 120. They appear above in running order rather than by size. Chapter 51, verse 2 fixes that order: the first antardasha of any mahadasha belongs to the lord of the mahadasha, the remaining eight follow in the standard Vimshottari sequence, and the same rule governs pratyantardashas. A Shani antardasha therefore opens with a Shani pratyantardasha and continues Budha, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, wrapping through the cycle to the graha standing immediately before Shani.
The sequence resets at every antardasha boundary rather than running on. When the Guru-Shani-Guru pratyantardasha ends, the next antardasha in a Guru mahadasha belongs to Budha, and it opens with a Budha pratyantardasha, not with the graha that would have come next in the old sub-cycle.
A second consequence falls out of the same verse. The opening of a mahadasha is its lord repeated at every level: a Guru mahadasha begins with the Guru antardasha, which begins with the Guru pratyantardasha (the same doubling that opens every major period, worked through for Venus at Shukra mahadasha, Shukra antardasha), which begins with the Guru sukshma and the Guru prana. Those first hours are the only stretch of a mahadasha in which the whole nested stack names one graha.
The structure is self-similar, because one vector of ratios does all the work. Dividing the nine allotments by 120 gives the proportions 7/120, 20/120, 6/120 and so on, and that same set of nine fractions carves a mahadasha into antardashas, an antardasha into pratyantardashas, and a pratyantardasha into sukshmantardashas. Only the phase changes: each level opens with the lord of the level above it and runs the cycle from there. Since the nine fractions sum to 1, the parts at any depth add back exactly to the whole they came from, which is why the nine figures listed above total 925 days rather than approximately 925.
Counting the divisions gives a sense of the grain. Nine mahadashas hold nine antardashas each, and each of those holds nine pratyantardashas, so one full 120-year cycle contains 81 antardashas and 729 pratyantardashas. The average pratyantardasha runs 120 years divided by 729, about 60 days, with a wide spread around that average.
Durations across the system span a factor of 37. The shortest pratyantardasha anywhere in Vimshottari is Surya inside the Surya antardasha of a Surya mahadasha: 6 x 6 x 6 / 14,400 years, or 5 days and 11 hours. The longest is the Shukra triple, 20 x 20 x 20 / 14,400 years, about 203 days. Scale tracks the parent mahadasha closely. Inside the 6-year Surya mahadasha the sub-sub-periods run between 5 and 61 days; inside the 16-year Guru mahadasha, between 15 and 162; inside the 20-year Shukra mahadasha, between 18 and 203. Narrow the scope further and the spread narrows with it: the Ketu antardasha of a Surya mahadasha lasts 6 x 7 / 120 = 0.35 years, or 128 days, and its nine pratyantardashas run from 6 days for Surya to 21 days for Shukra.
A nativity almost never begins on a boundary. The balance-of-dasha rule at chapter 46, verse 16 places the moment of birth somewhere inside a mahadasha in proportion to how far the Moon has travelled through its nakshatra, and the same fraction places it somewhere inside an antardasha and somewhere inside a pratyantardasha. The first sub-sub-period of a life is a fragment of one, and the remaining part of that fragment is the opening line of any dasha table.
Practitioners consult the third level when the question is where inside an antardasha something falls. An antardasha names a theme running months to years; the pratyantardasha cuts that stretch into windows of weeks and assigns each to a graha. Event-timing work in the modern literature, including K. N. Rao's Astrology, Destiny and the Wheel of Time and Sanjay Rath's Crux of Vedic Astrology: Timing of Events (Sagar Publications, 1998), reads the pratyantar lord alongside gochara, the transit positions, on the reasoning that two independent techniques converging on the same fortnight carry more weight than either on its own.
Three timing techniques in Jyotish answer different questions, and the pratyantardasha belongs to only one of them. Dasha runs the chart's own clock forward from the moment of birth and names the graha holding the current period. Gochara reads where the grahas stand in the sky now, against the natal Moon or the lagna, and describes what is arriving from outside. Muhurta works in the opposite direction, electing a moment to begin something rather than characterising a moment that arrives on its own. An astrologer dating an event already fixed in the calendar, a hearing or a scheduled operation, is working in the first two and not the third, and the pratyantardasha is the level at which dasha reaches a resolution comparable to a transit.
Parashara allots his attention differently at this level, and the proportions are worth knowing. Chapters 52 through 60 give antardasha results one mahadasha at a time, nine chapters in all, each running to several hundred lines. Chapter 61 handles every pratyantardasha in the system in one chapter of 81 short clauses, verses 2 through 82, keyed to the antardasha lord and the pratyantar lord as a pair with no mention of which mahadasha they sit inside. Surya pratyantar in a Surya antardasha receives "argument with other persons, loss of wealth, distress to wife, headache," followed by the note that all other pratyantar effects are to be judged in the same manner. Parashara treats the third level as a modifier of a verdict already reached two levels up.
Against all of that sits the arithmetic of birth-time error, which sets a floor on what the third level can resolve. Every boundary in the sequence hangs on one quantity: the fraction of its nakshatra the Moon had already crossed at the moment of birth, which chapter 46, verse 16 defines as the expired portion of the opening mahadasha. The Moon's mean motion is about 13 degrees 10 minutes a day against a nakshatra span of 13 degrees 20 minutes, so it crosses one nakshatra in roughly 24 hours and 18 minutes. A single minute of clock error misplaces it by about one part in 1,458 of that span.
That fraction propagates through the whole chart. It moves the end of the opening mahadasha by 1/1458 of the mahadasha's length, and since every later boundary is measured forward from that point, it moves all of them by the same number of days. In round terms the displacement is a quarter of a day per minute of error per year of the birth mahadasha. A nativity opening in the 20-year Shukra mahadasha shifts about 5 days for each minute of uncertainty in the recorded time; one opening in the 6-year Surya mahadasha shifts about a day and a half. The Moon's real daily motion ranges from roughly 11 degrees 46 minutes to 15 degrees 23 minutes as its distance changes, so the figure varies about 15 percent either way.
Four minutes of uncertainty in a Surya-mahadasha nativity displaces the timeline by 6 days, and the Surya pratyantardasha inside the Surya antardasha of that mahadasha lasts 5 days and 11 hours. The window is shorter than the error bar on its own position. A birth time recorded to the nearest quarter-hour, which is common on certificates and close to universal in family memory, cannot locate a pratyantardasha of a month or less with any confidence.
Each level down divides the search by nine on average, and the error moves the other way at a similar rate. Inside the 925-day Shani antardasha worked through above, naming a pratyantardasha narrows the window to a mean of 103 days, and naming a sukshmantardasha inside that narrows it to a mean of 11. The gain is real. So is what runs against it: a birth time uncertain by 15 minutes displaces every boundary in a 16-year Guru mahadasha by 60 days, more than half the 103-day mean and five times the 11-day one. Resolution gained by division and resolution lost to the clock cross somewhere, and where they cross is what decides how far down a particular chart can be read.
A second divergence sits in the definition of the dasha year itself. At 365.25 days it is 5.25 days longer than the 360-day savana year some computations use, and the gap compounds across a period: 99.75 days over a 19-year Shani mahadasha, about 630 days across a full 120-year cycle. Shyamasundara Dasa's study "How Long is a Year in Vimsottari Mahadasa?" works through both conventions and the arguments for each; most modern software defaults to 365.25 days. At mahadasha scale the choice moves a boundary by weeks inside a span of years. At pratyantardasha scale, a 100-day divergence can carry a 46-day window clean past its own end.
This is why the third level and chart rectification travel together. Rectification narrows a recorded birth time by fitting dated events in a life against dasha boundaries and working backwards to the Moon's exact longitude. A chart rectified to the minute supports pratyantardasha analysis; a chart recorded as "around seven in the morning" supports mahadasha analysis and, with care, antardasha analysis. Software will print pratyantardasha dates to the day for any birth time entered, with no indication of how much of that precision is real. The division is exact. The input is not.
How It Is Read
The third level answers a resolution question the first two cannot. A Shani mahadasha runs 19 years, and the antardashas inside it run from 11 months for Surya to 3 years and 2 months for Shukra. Neither span dates an event. The pratyantardasha divides the same interval into stretches of weeks, hands each to a different graha, and gives the finest resolution most working astrologers use.
Chapter 61, verse 2 of the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra shows how the level is read. It gives the Surya pratyantar in a Surya antardasha a list of afflictions, then withdraws them conditionally: those results "will not be produced, if Surya is in a Trikon etc., if Surya is the Lord of an auspicious Bhava, or is in an auspicious Bhava and in a benefic Varg." The general clause is a starting position, and the natal placement of the pratyantar lord decides whether it stands. Practitioners weigh the pratyantar lord's dignity, its house rulership from the lagna, its friendship or enmity with the antardasha lord, and whether the two support each other by house and aspect. A pratyantar lord sharing a signification with the antar lord is read as concentrating the antardasha's theme into that window; a pratyantar lord ruling unrelated houses is read as interrupting it.
The classical weighting shows in how much text each level receives. Nine chapters of BPHS describe antardasha results. One chapter, at a clause per pair, describes pratyantardasha results, and that clause names only the antar and pratyantar lords, leaving the mahadasha out of the reckoning entirely.
Below the third level the same division continues without limit. A sukshmantardasha divides a pratyantardasha by the same rule, a prana dasha divides that, and the arithmetic runs as far as anyone cares to take it. The Surya prana dasha inside four nested Surya periods of a Surya mahadasha lasts about 20 minutes, which is shorter than the uncertainty on most recorded birth times. The limit on the system is the clock, not the mathematics.
Connections
Inside Jyotish, pratyantardasha inherits everything from Vimshottari: the nine allotments, the 120-year total, the fixed running order, and the anchoring of the whole sequence to the natal Moon's nakshatra. It sits one level below the antardasha, and reading a current antardasha covers the level immediately above it, where most chart work stops. Because chapter 51 phrases its divisor as the total dasha years of all the grahas rather than as 120, the same three-level procedure carries into the conditional nakshatra dashas with their own totals: an Ashtottari pratyantardasha divides by 108 twice, a Yogini pratyantardasha by 36. The Kalachakra dasha is the exception in the family, subdividing by rashi rather than by graha and ordering its sub-periods by a different rule. Which graha holds a pratyantardasha tells a reader little on its own, so the analysis returns constantly to that graha's natal condition, whether Shani or another, and to the bhava it rules.
Other traditions nest their time cycles too, and the differences show what is particular to the Vimshottari version. Hellenistic and modern Western astrology time by profection, advancing the chart one sign per year so that each year carries a ruling planet. Vettius Valens works with the technique throughout the Anthology, written between roughly 150 and 175 CE, and monthly and daily variants exist, though the surviving texts disagree on how to reckon the lower levels. The structural difference is where the divisions come from. A profection subdivides a solar year, a unit external to the chart, while a pratyantardasha subdivides a period whose length was already set by the Moon's position at birth, so the third level in Jyotish is generated by the same measurement that generated the first.
Chinese four-pillars reckoning stamps a birth with four stem-and-branch pairs for the year, month, day, and hour, each carrying its elemental character, and layers ten-year luck cycles over them. The parallel with pratyantardasha lies in the hour pillar. It is the level that requires an accurate birth time, and Chinese practitioners treat it with the caution Jyotish reserves for sub-sub-periods. Both systems generate a fine-grained answer from a coarse input, and both traditions developed rectification methods to close the gap.
Numerology nests the same way, deriving a personal year from the birth date and the calendar year, then a personal month and a personal day inside it. The structure is identical and the exposure is not. A numerological personal day rests on a calendar date nobody disputes, so its limits are limits of interpretation rather than of measurement. Beside that, the pratyantardasha's dependence on a recorded minute is the price of deriving an entire timeline from one astronomical position.
