Beyond the Temporary Self
We’re going to talk about something that might be the most important idea in this entire curriculum. Or it might be the one that bounces right off you. Either response is fine. What matters is that you engage with it honestly.
The Question
Who are you?
Not your name. Not your job title. Not your relationship status or your accomplishments or your history. Strip all of that away. What’s left?
In yogic philosophy, what’s left is called Purusha — the transcendental Self. It’s described as absolutely independent of worldly existence. Unchanging. Eternal. Free from karma. Not touched by anything that happens in the body, the mind, or the story of your life.
That’s a massive claim. Let’s look at it.
The Argument
Everything you identify with is temporary. Your body changes constantly — every cell replaced, aging visible year by year. Your thoughts change moment to moment. Your emotions cycle. Your beliefs evolve. Your relationships transform. Your circumstances shift.
If you are any of these things, then “you” are constantly dying and being replaced. There is no stable “you” — just a series of temporary configurations that happen to have continuity of memory.
But something in you doesn’t change. There’s an awareness that was present when you were five and is present now. The content of awareness has changed completely — different thoughts, different body, different circumstances. But the awareness itself? That’s been steady the entire time.
Purusha is a name for that steady awareness. The witness behind the mind. The one who’s been watching the whole show without being part of it.
The Mind’s Illusion
The mind creates the illusion of identity with the temporary. “I am angry.” “I am my career.” “I am this body.” These statements feel true because the mind is so good at creating identification.
But notice: you can observe anger arising. You can watch career thoughts come and go. You can feel the body changing. There’s something that sees all of these things — and that something isn’t the things themselves.
Here’s the radical proposition: Spirit is never not liberated. What we call “realization” isn’t achieving something new. It’s the mind becoming clear enough to reflect what was always there — like cleaning a mirror so it can show the face that was always in front of it.
The Practical Question
You don’t have to believe this. You really don’t. Vedic philosophy isn’t a religion that demands faith. It’s a framework that invites investigation.
The practical question isn’t “is Purusha real?” It’s “what happens if I look?”
What happens when you ask “who is aware of my thoughts right now?” and look for the answer?
What happens when you stop identifying with the temporary for even a moment and ask what remains?
What changes if you relate to thoughts as things you have rather than things you are?
Today’s Practice
Sit quietly. Set aside at least fifteen minutes. Consider these questions:

What evidence would convince you that there’s a transcendental aspect of human existence? What would you need to experience? Don’t dismiss the question — take it seriously.

What would change in your daily life if you genuinely believed that your true identity was something permanent, unchanging, and free? How would you relate to problems? To loss? To fear?

What if this awareness — the one that’s reading these words right now — were already liberated and you simply hadn’t recognized it? What if freedom weren’t something to achieve but something to notice?

Who is aware of your thoughts right now? Look. Not at the thoughts. At whatever is seeing them.
Don’t force answers. Don’t try to produce a spiritual experience. Just let the questions sit with you and do their work. Sometimes the inquiry is more important than the answer.
Write whatever comes up — including skepticism, confusion, or “this seems ridiculous.” All of those are honest responses. Honest engagement with the question is the practice. The conclusion is less important than the looking.
