Neptune Square North Node

Overview

Neptune square North Node in synastry puts one person's Neptune 90 degrees from the other person's lunar nodal axis, and the growth it carries arrives as an image rather than as a person. The Neptune person holds a porousness, an imaginative reach, a willingness to keep no fixed edges, that the Node person's chart marks as unbuilt territory. Delivery runs through idealization, which is why the first two years of this contact produce testimony that later turns out to describe somebody who wasn't there.

The nodes sit 180 degrees apart on a single axis. A square to one of them is a square to the other at the same degree and the same orb, so the Neptune person stands at right angles to the direction the Node person is growing toward and at right angles to the well-worn competence they are meant to be spending down, at once, in one body. Nothing in the felt experience separates those two. Neptune reports atmosphere and withholds source.

Neptune was located by arithmetic before anyone looked at it. Urbain Le Verrier published a predicted position in the summer of 1846, and Johann Gottfried Galle at the Berlin Observatory found the planet on the night of 23 September that year, within a degree of the prediction. Jyotish has nowhere to put Neptune. It is not among the nine grahas, and the two ends of the axis are Rahu and Ketu, the chhaya grahas, shadow bodies with computed positions and no physical substance. The Puranic account has Svarbhanu drinking the amrita at the churning of the ocean and cut in two by Vishnu after the Sun and Moon report him, the head continuing as Rahu and the trunk as Ketu. Read through that frame, the Western aspect describes a planet with no standing in the scheme set at an angle to two points with no bodies. The reading is unflattering and structurally honest. Nothing in this contact has firm outlines, on either side.

The inaccuracy does not cancel the growth, and that is what separates this square from the Venus and Uranus contacts to the same axis. The Node person builds a picture of the Neptune person, grows toward the picture, and arrives somewhere real. Whether the picture matched anybody is a separate question with its own separate answer, and couples in this contact usually get the second answer years after the first.

Attraction & Chemistry

The pull registers as familiarity with no supporting history. The Node person meets the Neptune person and has the sense of resuming a conversation, and no detail attaches to it. Where the conjunction produces certainty about a person, the square produces certainty about a condition: something in the room has changed density, and the Node person assigns the change to the Neptune person, who may or may not have caused it.

Practitioners who track meeting circumstances in node synastry describe this contact arriving during a permeable stretch of the Node person's life. Grief, a long illness, a move to a country whose language they don't speak, the first months after leaving a marriage or a faith. The Neptune person does not produce the porousness. Ordinary behavior on the Neptune person's part supplies the draw: the ability to not know something and stay comfortable. They tolerate ambiguity as a resting state, engage with a story that has no ending yet, hold several incompatible things at once without visible strain. Imagination is the other half, and most accounts of this square leave it out. The nodal direction under a Neptune square usually involves the Node person's own imaginative or devotional faculty, which is undeveloped rather than absent. The name is rendered as Dispersion or Dissolution, wind moving over water, and Wilhelm's Judgment has the king approaching his temple. Dissolving is not the problem in the classical reading. Egotism and rigidity dissolve, and that is the work. The temple is what keeps dispersal from being mere scattering: a fixed point outside both people that the dissolving happens around.
