What does Black Moon Lilith represent in astrology?

Black Moon Lilith is the lunar apogee: the point in the Moon's elliptical orbit that sits farthest from Earth. Nothing physical occupies it. Earth holds one focus of the Moon's ellipse, and the far end of that ellipse's long axis, around 405,500 km out, is the degree astrologers plot. Some ephemerides define the same longitude as the orbit's empty second focus, which lies in the identical direction from Earth.

The Moon's line of apsides rotates forward through the zodiac in about 8.85 years. Mean Lilith spends roughly nine months in a sign and comes back to its natal degree shortly before a person's ninth birthday, again just before eighteen, again in the mid-twenties. Few chart factors complete a full return that early in a life.

Two versions of the point circulate, and they disagree. Mean Black Moon Lilith averages the apogee's motion into a smooth forward drift and never turns retrograde. True Lilith, also called osculating Lilith, tracks the apogee where it sits at each instant, and since the Sun's pull deforms the lunar orbit continuously, that position swings up to roughly 30 degrees either side of the mean and reverses direction frequently. Three unrelated things carry the name. Asteroid 1181 Lilith is a genuine main-belt rock, found by Benjamin Jekhowsky at Algiers Observatory on 11 February 1927 and named for the French composer Lili Boulanger, with no mythological connection at all. Dark Moon Lilith is a hypothetical second satellite of Earth reported by Georg Waldemath in 1898 and never confirmed by any observatory since. Black Moon Lilith is the apogee, and it's what almost all modern chart software prints when it prints Lilith.

The meanings attached to the point come from its namesake, not from orbital mechanics. Astrologers who use Lilith read it as the register of what a person refuses, what they were shamed out of, and what stays feral in them after socialization has done its work. Dom Neroman, writing in France in the 1930s, is generally credited with naming the apogee the Lune Noire and fixing that reading to it; English-language astrology adopted it decades later, during the minor-point revival of the 1980s and 1990s.

What is the mythology and symbolism of Black Moon Lilith?

The name predates astrology by roughly three thousand years. Akkadian sources name a class of night spirits, the lilītu and the ardat lilî, linked with wind, with the deaths of infants, and with men who sleep alone. She refuses to lie beneath him, argues that equal origin means equal standing, speaks the Ineffable Name, and leaves for the Red Sea. Nothing earlier in Jewish literature tells that story, which makes it a medieval composition rather than an ancient tradition. Kabbalah gave her a cosmology. The Zohar, composed in Castile in the late thirteenth century, pairs Lilith with Samael and locates them in the Sitra Achra, the Other Side, the structured domain of impurity that shadows the sefirot. That placement is why Lilith carries metaphysical weight in the Western esoteric stream instead of staying folklore. Jewish incantation bowls from Sasanian Babylonia, inscribed in spiral Aramaic and buried under thresholds, name her directly and were written to bind her.

One famous image is probably not her. The Burney Relief in the British Museum, an Old Babylonian terracotta of about 1800 to 1750 BCE showing a winged goddess with taloned feet standing on lions, was identified as Lilith in early twentieth-century scholarship. The museum now titles it the Queen of the Night, and most Assyriologists favor Ishtar or Ereshkigal.

Astrological Lilith absorbed that reading almost wholesale. A good deal of what now circulates as traditional Lilith interpretation is barely fifty years old.

What does Black Moon Lilith retrograde mean?

Mean Black Moon Lilith never retrogrades. Its motion is defined as a uniform forward drift, so an ephemeris showing mean Lilith moving backwards contains an error. True Lilith is the opposite case, in apparent retrograde about 40 percent of the time.

The reversals come from the Sun. Solar gravity deforms the Moon's orbit continuously, so the instantaneous apogee jitters, and true Lilith can stall, back up several degrees, and move forward again inside a few weeks. Across a year it oscillates around the mean position by as much as 30 degrees in either direction.

Astrologers who work with the true point read those retrograde stretches as an inward turn of the same material, describing them as spans when a refusal is rehearsed privately rather than spoken. Astrologers using the mean point treat the question as empty, since a uniform drift has nothing to reverse.
