What Your Nakshatra Says About Your Health
Where your body signals first, and what to do about it
In Vedic astrology, each of the 27 nakshatras is mapped to a specific region of the body. This is not metaphor. The system runs from head to feet as you move through the zodiac — Ashwini at the top of the skull, Revati at the soles of the feet, and everything in between distributed across the remaining 25 nakshatras.
Your Moon nakshatra — the nakshatra the Moon occupied at your birth — marks the body area where your system tends to register stress, imbalance, and vulnerability first. Knowing this gives you a practical starting point for preventive care. Not a diagnosis. Not a destiny. A signal map.
How the Body Map Works
The nakshatra-body connection follows the same head-to-feet logic as the zodiac signs, but with finer resolution. Where the twelve signs divide the body into broad zones (Aries = head, Taurus = throat, etc.), the 27 nakshatras break those zones into specific structures.
This mapping comes from classical Jyotish texts and is used alongside Ayurvedic assessment. When a Vedic astrologer and an Ayurvedic practitioner work together, the nakshatra health map helps focus clinical attention on the areas most likely to need support.
Nakshatras and Their Body Regions
Head and Face (Aries Nakshatras)
Ashwini (0-13°20’ Aries) — Upper head, cerebral region. Governs the crown of the skull and upper brain. Health tendencies include headaches, head injuries, and neurological sensitivity. The Ashwini Kumaras are divine physicians, and people with strong Ashwini influence often have an instinct for healing but need to watch their own head and nervous system. Ketu’s rulership can produce conditions that are hard to pinpoint or diagnose through conventional means.
Practical focus: Head protection during physical activity. Adequate sleep to support neurological health. If headaches are chronic, investigate root causes rather than masking symptoms.
Bharani (13°20’-26°40’ Aries) — Forehead, cerebral area. Governs the lower head and forehead region. Venus rulership connects this nakshatra to the reproductive system as well — Bharani’s symbol is the yoni (womb). Health patterns often involve the head and reproductive organs simultaneously. Hormonal headaches, for instance, fit the Bharani pattern.
Practical focus: Hormonal balance. Stress management that addresses both head tension and reproductive health. Regular check-ups for reproductive system wellness.
Krittika (26°40’ Aries-10° Taurus) — Face, neck, and throat (upper portion). Spans the fire of Aries and the stability of Taurus, governing the face and upper throat. Sun rulership gives strong vitality but also a tendency toward inflammation, fevers, and heat-related conditions. Skin issues on the face, eye strain, and throat infections fit this nakshatra’s pattern.
Practical focus: Cooling practices for Pitta imbalance. Eye care, especially if you work with screens. Throat care — warm water, avoiding excessive spicy food if prone to throat inflammation.
Throat and Shoulders (Taurus Nakshatras)
Rohini (10-23°20’ Taurus) — Throat, palate, chin. Governed by the Moon and associated with nourishment, Rohini’s health connection centers on the throat and everything it does: swallowing, speaking, thyroid function, and lymphatic drainage in the neck. Emotional suppression often shows up here as throat tightness or thyroid imbalance.
Practical focus: Thyroid monitoring, especially for women. Singing or vocal expression as both creative outlet and throat health maintenance. Warm herbal teas that support throat tissue.
Mrigashira (23°20’ Taurus-6°40’ Gemini) — Eyes, nose, upper sinuses. Mars rules this gentle, seeking nakshatra. The body connection runs through the sensory organs of the face — particularly the eyes and nose. Allergies, sinus problems, and eye strain are common Mrigashira health patterns. The searching quality of this nakshatra can manifest physically as sensitivity to environmental stimuli.
Practical focus: Sinus care during seasonal transitions. Neti pot or nasya (nasal oiling) as regular practice. Eye breaks and outdoor time to rest vision.
Ardra (6°40’-20° Gemini) — Throat, arms, shoulders. Rahu rules this storm nakshatra, and its body region spans the throat, arms, and shoulder girdle. Ardra health patterns tend toward sudden onset — acute infections, sudden muscle spasms, injuries from overexertion. Rahu can produce unusual or hard-to-categorize symptoms in these areas.
Practical focus: Shoulder mobility work. Avoid pushing through pain in the upper body. When illness strikes suddenly, take it seriously rather than working through it.
Chest and Upper Torso (Cancer Nakshatras)
Punarvasu (20° Gemini-3°20’ Cancer) — Chest, lungs, upper ribcage. Jupiter rules this optimistic, renewing nakshatra. The chest and lung area are its domain. Respiratory health is the primary concern — asthma, bronchitis, or simply a chest that tightens under emotional stress. Jupiter’s expansive nature can also mean these individuals over-commit physically and deplete their lung capacity through insufficient rest.
Practical focus: Pranayama (breath work) as daily practice. Cardiovascular fitness that builds lung capacity gradually. Attend to any cough or chest tightness early rather than ignoring it.
Pushya (3°20’-16°40’ Cancer) — Lungs, stomach, ribcage. Saturn rules this most auspicious nakshatra, and its body region covers the lungs and stomach. The Saturn connection means health issues here tend to be chronic rather than acute — slow-developing digestive patterns, persistent respiratory weakness, conditions that build over years of neglect. The positive side: Pushya natives who invest in prevention tend to have remarkable endurance.
Practical focus: Consistent digestive routines. Eat at regular times, favor warm and cooked foods. Long-term respiratory care rather than crisis management.
Ashlesha (16°40’-30° Cancer) — Stomach, esophagus, diaphragm. Mercury rules this serpent nakshatra, and its body connection centers on the stomach, esophagus, and the muscular diaphragm that separates chest from abdomen. Nervous stomach, acid reflux, and stress-related digestive issues are classic Ashlesha health patterns. The serpent symbolism extends to conditions involving constriction or coiling — muscle cramps, hiatal hernia, esophageal spasm.
Practical focus: Stress-digestion connection. Eat in calm settings. Address anxiety and mental tension as digestive medicine. Avoid eating when emotionally activated.
Heart and Upper Abdomen (Leo Nakshatras)
Magha (0-13°20’ Leo) — Heart, upper back, spine. Ketu rules this royal nakshatra. The heart and upper spine are its domain, both physically and symbolically. Cardiac health, upper back tension, and spinal alignment are the practical concerns. Ketu’s involvement can mean heart-related symptoms that are more functional than structural — racing heart from anxiety, chest tightness from emotional overwhelm.
Practical focus: Heart-healthy lifestyle without obsession. Regular movement that supports spinal alignment. If you carry stress in your upper back, address it consistently rather than waiting for acute episodes.
Purva Phalguni (13°20’-26°40’ Leo) — Heart, spine, upper abdomen. Venus rules this pleasure-oriented nakshatra. The body region overlaps with Magha but extends into the upper abdomen. Overindulgence is the primary health risk here — too much rich food, too much alcohol, too little physical discipline. Venus loves comfort, and the body eventually presents the bill.
Practical focus: Moderation as medicine. Balance indulgence with movement. Liver support if you tend toward rich eating and drinking.
Uttara Phalguni (26°40’ Leo-10° Virgo) — Spine, lower back, bowels. Sun rules this nakshatra of responsibility and commitment. The body region moves into the lower back and intestinal area. Lower back pain from carrying too much responsibility (literal or figurative) is a trademark pattern. Digestive regularity is also relevant.
Practical focus: Core strength to support the lower back. Delegate rather than carrying everything yourself. Fiber and hydration for intestinal health.
Abdomen and Digestive System (Virgo-Libra Nakshatras)
Hasta (10-23°20’ Virgo) — Hands, intestines, bowels. Moon-ruled Hasta governs the hands and the central digestive tract. Conditions involving manual dexterity (carpal tunnel, arthritis in the hands) and intestinal function (IBS, malabsorption) are both relevant. The hands-gut connection may seem odd, but both relate to grasping and processing — the hands process the physical world, the intestines process food.
Practical focus: Hand care if you work with your hands or type extensively. Digestive health through proper food combining and mindful eating.
Chitra (23°20’ Virgo-6°40’ Libra) — Lower abdomen, kidneys. Mars-ruled Chitra spans the transition from Virgo to Libra. The body region covers the lower abdomen and kidneys. Urinary tract issues, kidney function, and lower abdominal inflammation are the health patterns to watch. Mars can make these conditions acute rather than gradual.
Practical focus: Adequate water intake. Kidney-supportive herbs if there is a family history of kidney issues. Do not ignore lower abdominal pain — investigate promptly.
Swati (6°40’-20° Libra) — Kidneys, bladder, skin. Rahu-ruled Swati governs the kidneys, bladder, and skin. The wind god Vayu presides here, and Vata-type imbalances are common — dry skin, urinary irregularity, bloating from gas. Rahu’s involvement can mean these symptoms are intermittent and unpredictable, coming and going without clear pattern.
Practical focus: Skin hydration (internal and external). Vata-pacifying diet and routine — warm, oily, grounding foods. Consistent hydration throughout the day.
Lower Abdomen and Reproductive System (Scorpio Nakshatras)
Vishakha (20° Libra-3°20’ Scorpio) — Lower abdomen, reproductive organs. Jupiter-ruled Vishakha bridges Libra and Scorpio, governing the lower abdomen and reproductive system. This goal-oriented nakshatra can push the body past its limits in pursuit of achievement. Reproductive health and lower abdominal conditions demand attention, particularly during high-stress periods.
Anuradha (3°20’-16°40’ Scorpio) — Bladder, pelvic region, reproductive organs. Saturn-ruled Anuradha governs the pelvic bowl. Saturn’s influence means conditions here may develop slowly and respond best to patient, consistent treatment rather than quick fixes. Chronic pelvic pain, bladder issues, and reproductive conditions that require sustained attention fit this pattern.
Jyeshtha (16°40’-30° Scorpio) — Reproductive organs, colon. Mercury-ruled Jyeshtha governs the deep pelvic region and colon. The “elder” nakshatra carries themes of authority and protection, and its health patterns involve the body’s elimination and reproductive functions. Nervous tension can affect both the colon (IBS-type patterns) and reproductive health.
Practical focus for all three Scorpio nakshatras: Pelvic floor awareness and care. Regular reproductive health screenings. Stress management that addresses the lower body specifically — the pelvic area holds tension that the mind does not always register.
Hips and Thighs (Sagittarius Nakshatras)
Mula (0-13°20’ Sagittarius) — Hips, sciatic nerve, feet. Ketu-ruled Mula governs the root — hips, the sciatic nerve complex, and also the feet (connecting the beginning to the end). Sciatica, hip joint problems, and conditions involving the body’s structural foundation are classic Mula patterns. Ketu’s influence can make these conditions mysterious in origin or resistant to straightforward treatment.
Practical focus: Hip mobility work. Gentle stretching for the sciatic nerve. Investigate structural alignment if hip pain is recurring. Grounding practices — walking barefoot, standing on earth.
Purva Ashadha (13°20’-26°40’ Sagittarius) — Thighs, hips, arterial system. Venus-ruled Purva Ashadha governs the upper thighs and the arterial system that supplies them. Circulation in the legs, thigh muscle health, and arterial function are relevant. The “invincible” quality of this nakshatra can lead to ignoring early warning signs in these areas.
Uttara Ashadha (26°40’ Sagittarius-10° Capricorn) — Thighs, knees (upper). Sun-ruled Uttara Ashadha bridges the thigh and knee region. Weight-bearing joint health, particularly where the thigh meets the knee, is the primary concern. This nakshatra’s “later victory” quality means health investments pay off over time — consistent joint care prevents problems that would otherwise accumulate.
Practical focus for Sagittarius nakshatras: Lower body strength training. Walking, cycling, or swimming to maintain circulation and joint health. Do not neglect the legs in favor of upper body fitness.
Knees, Shins, and Lower Legs (Capricorn-Aquarius Nakshatras)
Shravana (10-23°20’ Capricorn) — Knees, ears. Moon-ruled Shravana governs the knees and ears — the joints of stability and the organs of listening. Knee problems and hearing issues are both relevant. The connection is not arbitrary: both knees and ears involve structural integrity under pressure.
Dhanishta (23°20’ Capricorn-6°40’ Aquarius) — Knees, ankles, calves. Mars-ruled Dhanishta spans the lower leg. Athletic injuries to the knee, ankle, and calf muscles are common patterns. Mars brings acute risk — sprains, strains, impact injuries.
Shatabhisha (6°40’-20° Aquarius) — Calves, ankles, circulatory system. Rahu-ruled Shatabhisha (“the hundred healers”) governs the calves and circulatory system of the lower legs. Varicose veins, poor lower-leg circulation, and ankle swelling are relevant patterns. Rahu’s involvement may mean these symptoms appear suddenly or resist easy categorization.
Practical focus: Knee care through proper alignment in all movement. Calf stretching and ankle strengthening. Compression support if you stand for long periods. Elevate the legs after extended sitting or standing.
Feet and Ankles (Pisces Nakshatras)
Purva Bhadrapada (20° Aquarius-3°20’ Pisces) — Ankles, feet, shins. Jupiter-ruled Purva Bhadrapada governs the ankles and the transition to the feet. Ankle instability, shin splints, and foot alignment issues are relevant health patterns.
Uttara Bhadrapada (3°20’-16°40’ Pisces) — Feet, toes. Saturn-ruled Uttara Bhadrapada governs the feet proper. Saturn’s chronic-condition tendency applies here — plantar fasciitis, bunions, conditions that develop slowly through years of neglect or poor footwear.
Revati (16°40’-30° Pisces) — Feet, soles, toes. Mercury-ruled Revati governs the soles of the feet and the final structures of the body. Foot sensitivity, nerve issues in the feet, and conditions affecting the soles are relevant. As the last nakshatra, Revati completes the body map — and reminds us that the foundation we stand on deserves as much care as any other part.
Practical focus: Good footwear. Foot massage and care. Barefoot walking on natural surfaces when possible. Address foot pain early — it affects posture, gait, and the entire kinetic chain above it.
Using This Information Practically
The nakshatra-body map is most useful as a prioritization tool for preventive care. You cannot protect everything equally. Your nakshatra tells you where to pay attention first.
During stressful periods, notice where your body speaks. If your Moon nakshatra governs the throat and you lose your voice every time you are overworked, that is the signal to heed — not just with lozenges, but with the lifestyle changes that prevent the pattern.
When choosing health practices, weight your nakshatra region. Daily abhyanga (oil massage) benefits everyone, but someone with Moon in a lower-leg nakshatra might give extra time to the calves and ankles. Someone with Moon in a chest nakshatra might prioritize pranayama over other practices.
Combine with Ayurvedic assessment. Your nakshatra’s doshic tendency (Vata, Pitta, or Kapha) adds another layer. Ketu-ruled nakshatras tend Vata. Sun-ruled nakshatras tend Pitta. Moon-ruled nakshatras tend Kapha. This dosha association helps you choose foods, herbs, and routines that support your vulnerable areas specifically. See understanding your constitution for more on doshic assessment.
The body and the stars are not separate systems. They are the same intelligence expressing at different scales. Your nakshatra does not cause health problems — it shows you where to look, what to protect, and how to listen to the body’s own wisdom about what it needs.
