About Yunmen (LU2)

The name Yunmen means “Cloud Gate” — the doorway through which the cloud-like qi of the Lung passes out across the chest. The image is apt for a point set at the very top of the channel, where the Lung’s diffusing function meets the open air of the upper body.

Though it carries no five-shu or special-point title, LU2 has a long history as a local point for the chest and shoulder, working closely with LU1 just below it. The two are frequently described together as the channel’s upper gateway, the place where Lung qi is dispersed outward and downward.

Its notability lies as much in its anatomy as its action: like its neighbour, it overlies the dome of the lung, and the classical texts treat it with the same caution. It marks, in the channel’s geography, the threshold between the trunk and the arm down which the Hand Taiyin pathway will travel.

Classical Category

Point of the Hand Taiyin Lung channel

What are the functions of Yunmen in TCM?

In TCM this point is classically described as opening and descending Lung qi, dispersing fullness in the chest, and easing the upper chest and shoulder; it is often paired with the neighbouring LU1 for disorders of the chest.

What is Yunmen classically indicated for?

Classically indicated for cough, asthma and wheezing, fullness and oppression of the chest, and pain in the shoulder and the inner aspect of the arm.

Where is Yunmen located?

The WHO Standard Acupuncture Point Locations places LU2 on the anterior thoracic wall, in the depression of the infraclavicular fossa, medial to the coracoid process of the scapula, 6 cun lateral to the anterior median line, in the depression below the lateral end of the clavicle.

Surface Anatomy

Lies in the infraclavicular fossa medial to the coracoid process, over the interval between the deltoid and pectoralis major; the cephalic vein, the deltopectoral groove and branches of the axillary vessels are nearby, with the lung apex deep to the region.

Needling reference

Educational reference only — describing how classical and standard texts characterize this point, not clinical instruction.

Standard references describe oblique or transverse insertion toward the lateral chest to roughly 0.5–0.8 cun. As with LU1, perpendicular or deep insertion is cautioned against because of the underlying pleura and lung apex.

What are the cautions for Yunmen?

Cautions

A recognized pneumothorax-risk point. Deep or medially angled needling is contraindicated in standard references owing to the proximity of the pleural apex; insertion is described as shallow and angled away from the thorax.
