Zayin is the seventh letter and the third Simple Letter. It governs Gemini, the month of Sivan (May-June), and the faculty of walking (locomotion). Its pictographic origin is a sword or weapon — the instrument of discrimination that separates truth from falsehood, the essential from the non-essential.

On the Tree of Life, Zayin connects Binah (Understanding) to Tiferet (Beauty), carrying the structuring intelligence of the Great Mother into the harmonizing center of the Tree. The Sefer Yetzirah calls this the Disposing Intelligence, the consciousness that arranges and distinguishes, placing each thing in its proper category.

The Zohar (I:48b) teaches that Zayin represents Shabbat, the seventh day. The word zayin contains zan, meaning "nourishes" — the seventh day nourishes the six days of work that preceded it. This is the sword of rest: the discriminating act of stopping, of choosing not to create, which paradoxically creates the space in which creation can be truly received and integrated.

The Bahir (Section 60) connects Zayin to the duality inherent in Gemini — the Twins who are two and one simultaneously. The sword of Zayin does not destroy opposition; it reveals the line of distinction that allows two things to exist side by side without confusion. Rabbi Shlomo Alkabetz, composer of Lekha Dodi, wrote that Zayin's discriminating function is essential for love: genuine union requires that each partner remain distinct. Merger without distinction is not love but obliteration.

Zayin's gematria of 7 pervades sacred architecture: seven days, seven planets in classical astrology, seven lower sefirot, seven notes of the musical scale. Abraham Abulafia used Zayin in meditation to sharpen the mind's capacity for distinction, treating it as a spiritual scalpel that cuts through the confusion of undifferentiated experience to reveal the patterns hidden within.
