The 22 Hebrew Letters
The sacred alphabet — 22 creative forces through which the universe was spoken into being.
In the Sefer Yetzirah, God created the universe through 32 paths of wisdom: 10 Sefirot and 22 Hebrew letters. Each letter is not merely a symbol but a force of creation — a channel through which divine energy flows into form. The letters divide into three groups: 3 Mothers (elements), 7 Doubles (planets), and 12 Simples (zodiac), mapping the structure of time, space, and the human soul.
Mother Letters (Imot)
Alef, Mem, Shin — assigned to Air, Water, and Fire. The three primordial elements from which all creation emerges. The Sefer Yetzirah calls them the "three mothers" who gave birth to the universe.
Double Letters (Kefulot)
Seven letters with two pronunciations (hard and soft), assigned to the seven classical planets and the seven days of creation. They govern the polarities of life: wisdom/folly, wealth/poverty, seed/desolation.
Simple Letters (Peshutot)
Twelve letters assigned to the twelve zodiac signs, the twelve months, and twelve faculties of the soul. They map the cycle of time and the spectrum of human experience.

The Letters as Paths
Each Hebrew letter corresponds to one of the 22 paths connecting the Sefirot on the Tree of Life. Where the Sefirot are the nodes of divine consciousness, the letters are the channels between them — the verbs to the Sefirot's nouns. Together, the 10 Sefirot and 22 letters form the 32 paths of wisdom described in the Sefer Yetzirah as the totality of creation's blueprint.
