What Are Essential Oils?

This concentration is what makes essential oils both powerful and potentially hazardous. They are not the same as dried herbs or herbal teas — they are 50-100 times more concentrated than the whole plant. A cup of chamomile tea is gentle; undiluted chamomile essential oil on sensitive skin can cause irritation. The concentration demands respect, dilution, and informed use.

Aromatherapy — the therapeutic use of essential oils — has roots in every major healing tradition. How Essential Oils Work

Understanding Notes

Eucalyptus

Respiratory clearing, decongestant, antimicrobial. The oil you reach for during colds, sinus congestion, and chest tightness. 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) is the primary active compound. Frankincense

How to Use Essential Oils

Diffusion

Topical Application

Always dilute. Mix essential oil into a carrier oil (jojoba, sweet almond, coconut, or sesame) before applying to skin. Standard dilution: 2-3 drops essential oil per teaspoon (5ml) of carrier oil for adults (1% dilution for sensitive areas, 2% for general body use). Apply to pulse points (wrists, temples, behind ears), the soles of the feet, or specific areas of concern. Never apply undiluted essential oils to skin — even oils labeled "safe for neat use" can cause sensitization with repeated direct application.

Inhalation

The simplest method: open the bottle and breathe. For deeper effect, add 2-3 drops to a bowl of steaming water, drape a towel over your head, and inhale for 5-10 minutes (the steam inhalation method — effective for respiratory congestion). Bath

Essential oils are not water-soluble — they will float on the surface undiluted and can irritate skin on contact. Always mix 5-8 drops into a dispersant before adding to bathwater: a tablespoon of carrier oil, a cup of Epsom salt, or a small amount of unscented liquid soap. Then add to running water. This ensures the oil disperses evenly rather than sitting in concentrated spots on the water's surface.

Safety Essentials

Essential oils are concentrated plant chemistry. Used properly, they are safe and effective. Used carelessly, they can cause real harm. These are non-negotiable guidelines:

Always dilute for skin application

No exceptions for beginners. Undiluted ("neat") application can cause contact dermatitis, chemical burns, and permanent sensitization — a condition where you become permanently reactive to the oil even at normal dilutions. Once sensitization develops, it does not reverse. Dilute to 1-2% (2-4 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil) for all topical use.

Phototoxic oils and sunlight

Certain oils — primarily cold-pressed citrus (bergamot, lemon, lime, grapefruit, bitter orange) — contain furanocoumarins that react with UV light to cause severe burns, blistering, and permanent hyperpigmentation. Do not apply these oils to skin that will be exposed to sunlight or tanning beds within 12-18 hours. Steam-distilled versions of citrus oils are generally non-phototoxic.

Children and infants

Many oils safe for adults are not safe for children. Eucalyptus and rosemary (high in 1,8-cineole and camphor) should not be used on or near children under 6 — they can cause respiratory distress. Pets

Tea tree oil is toxic to both cats and dogs in concentrated form. Diffuse cautiously in homes with pets: ensure the room is ventilated and the animal can leave the space. Never apply essential oils directly to a pet's skin or fur.

Pregnancy

Many oils are contraindicated during the first trimester, and some throughout pregnancy. Clary sage, rosemary in concentrated use, juniper, and pennyroyal are among the oils commonly avoided. Lavender, chamomile, and citrus oils are generally treated as lower-risk in normal dilution after the first trimester, but pregnancy is a place for conservative use rather than experimentation. Consult a qualified aromatherapist or midwife familiar with essential oil safety during pregnancy.

Internal use

Do not ingest essential oils unless under the direct guidance of a clinical aromatherapist trained in internal use. Essential oils are not food-grade flavoring in therapeutic concentrations. Peppermint oil swallowed undiluted can burn the esophageal lining. Wintergreen oil (methyl salicylate) is lethal in small quantities. "Natural" does not mean "safe to swallow." Choosing Quality Oils

The essential oil market includes a wide quality spectrum — from pure, high-quality oils to adulterated products cut with synthetic fragrance compounds or cheaper carrier oils. Quality indicators to look for:

Latin botanical name on the label "Lavender oil" is ambiguous — it could be Lavandula angustifolia (true lavender, therapeutic), Lavandula latifolia (spike lavender, more camphoraceous), or a hybrid (lavandin). The Latin name tells you exactly which species you are buying.
GC/MS testing available Gas Chromatography / Mass Spectrometry reports verify the chemical composition of each batch. Reputable companies provide these reports on request or on their website. GC/MS testing reveals whether the oil has been adulterated, diluted, or mislabeled.
Country of origin and plant part listed Where the plant was grown and which part was distilled affects the oil's chemistry. French lavender differs from Bulgarian lavender. Cinnamon bark oil differs from cinnamon leaf oil (bark is much hotter and more potentially irritating). Transparency about sourcing indicates a company that cares about what they sell.
Dark glass bottles Essential oils degrade in light and heat. Amber or cobalt blue glass protects the oil from UV degradation. Clear glass or plastic bottles suggest a company that is not protecting the product — or that the product is synthetic fragrance, not essential oil.

Avoid oils labeled as "fragrance oil," "perfume oil," or "nature-identical" — these are synthetic or heavily processed and have no therapeutic value. Price is also an indicator: if rose otto or sandalwood is priced the same as lemon or tea tree, it is not genuine. Some oils are inherently expensive because the raw material yield is low.

Lavender is the universal starting oil — calming, versatile, safe, affordable. Get a carrier oil

Jojoba oil is the best all-purpose carrier — it closely mimics the skin's natural sebum, has a long shelf life, and is odorless. Sweet almond oil is a good alternative (lighter, slightly nutty). You need a carrier oil before you can apply any essential oil to skin. A 4oz bottle will last months.

Start with inhalation

The safest and simplest method. Open the bottle and breathe. Add a drop to your palms, rub them together, cup over your nose, and inhale slowly for three breaths. Dilute one drop of essential oil in a teaspoon of carrier oil. Apply a small amount to the inside of your forearm. Wait 24 hours. Common Misconceptions

"Essential oils are safe because they're natural"

Essential oils are concentrated plant chemistry — 50-100 times more potent than the whole plant. Undiluted application can cause burns, sensitization, and allergic reactions. Wintergreen oil is lethal if swallowed in small quantities. Pennyroyal has caused fatal liver failure. "Natural" and "safe" are not synonyms. Proper dilution, informed use, and respect for the chemistry are required.

"You can take essential oils internally"

Internal use of essential oils is practiced in some clinical aromatherapy traditions, but it depends on specialized knowledge of dosing, toxicity thresholds, and drug interactions. Self-directed internal essential oil use is risky and unnecessary — inhalation and topical application are the standard low-risk routes. Companies that market internal essential oil use to untrained consumers are prioritizing sales over safety.

"'Therapeutic grade' is a meaningful standard"

There is no independent, regulatory body that defines or certifies "therapeutic grade" essential oils. The term was created by essential oil companies for marketing purposes. It is not an FDA classification, an ISO standard, or a third-party certification. What matters is the oil's purity (verified by GC/MS testing), its botanical identity (correct species), and its sourcing (how the plant was grown and the oil extracted). The label "therapeutic grade" tells you about the company's marketing, not the oil's quality.

"More is better"

Essential oils follow a dose-response curve that peaks and then reverses. Lavender at 1-2% dilution calms the nervous system; at high concentrations it can become stimulating. Three drops in a diffuser scents a room effectively; fifteen drops overwhelms the olfactory system and can cause headaches. More oil does not produce more benefit — it produces different (often undesirable) effects. Minimum effective dose is the operating principle.

"Essential oils can cure diseases"

Essential oils have documented antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, calming, and pain-modulating properties in specific contexts. They can be useful tools for scent, atmosphere, relaxation, sleep routines, minor skin care, respiratory comfort, and mood support. They do not cure cancer, treat serious infections, or replace medical care for acute or chronic illness. Claims to the contrary are irresponsible and unsupported by evidence.
