What Are Chakras and How Do They Work?
Chakras are energy centers in the body. The word comes from Sanskrit and means “wheel” — each chakra is described as a spinning vortex where physical, emotional, and spiritual energy concentrates.
There are seven main chakras, stacked along the spine from its base to the crown of the head. Each one governs specific physical areas, emotional patterns, and aspects of consciousness. When energy flows freely through them, you feel balanced, healthy, and clear. When one or more gets stuck — through stress, trauma, habits, or neglect — you feel it in your body and your life.
This isn’t mystical hand-waving. The chakra locations correspond to major nerve bundles, endocrine glands, and organs. The “energy” framework gives you a practical map for understanding where you’re holding tension, avoiding feeling, or running on overdrive.
The Seven Main Chakras
1. Root Chakra (Muladhara)
Location: Base of the spine, pelvic floor Governs: Survival, safety, stability, belonging Color: Red Element: Earth
This is your foundation. The root chakra deals with basic needs — physical safety, financial security, having a stable home, feeling like you belong somewhere. It’s the most primal energy center.
When balanced: You feel grounded, secure, and present in your body. You can handle uncertainty without panic.
Signs of blockage: Chronic anxiety about money or safety. Feeling ungrounded or “floaty.” Lower back pain, leg problems, immune weakness. Hoarding behavior or inability to settle anywhere. Constant fight-or-flight activation.
How to balance it:
- Movement: Walking barefoot, standing poses, squats, anything that connects you to the ground
- Food: Root vegetables (beets, carrots, potatoes), red foods, protein-rich meals
- Sound: Chanting “LAM,” drumming, low-frequency music
- Crystals: Red jasper, black tourmaline, smoky quartz
- Practice: Spend time in nature. Put your feet on actual earth. Organize your finances, even imperfectly — the act itself soothes this center
2. Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)
Location: Lower abdomen, about two inches below the navel Governs: Creativity, pleasure, emotions, sexuality, adaptability Color: Orange Element: Water
The sacral chakra is where you feel desire, emotion, and creative impulse. It governs your relationship with pleasure and your ability to go with the flow rather than rigidly controlling everything.
When balanced: You enjoy sensory experience without addiction to it. Creative energy flows. Emotions move through you rather than getting stuck. Intimacy feels natural.
Signs of blockage: Guilt around pleasure. Creative stagnation. Emotional numbness or, conversely, being overwhelmed by emotions. Low libido or unhealthy sexual patterns. Hip tightness, urinary issues, lower abdominal discomfort.
How to balance it:
- Movement: Hip openers, fluid movement like dancing, swimming
- Food: Orange foods (oranges, mangoes, sweet potatoes), healthy fats, plenty of water
- Sound: Chanting “VAM,” flowing water sounds, music that makes you want to move
- Crystals: Carnelian, moonstone, orange calcite
- Practice: Create something with no agenda — draw, cook, garden, play music. Let pleasure be acceptable.
3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)
Location: Upper abdomen, stomach area Governs: Personal power, will, confidence, self-worth, digestion Color: Yellow Element: Fire
Your internal fire lives here. The solar plexus is the seat of personal agency — your ability to set boundaries, make decisions, and act on your own behalf. It’s also directly connected to digestive health (ever had a “gut feeling” about something?).
When balanced: You trust yourself. You can say no. You take action without needing permission. Digestion works well. You have steady energy through the day.
Signs of blockage: Low self-esteem, indecisiveness, people-pleasing. Digestive problems — bloating, acid reflux, ulcers. Fatigue, especially after meals. Giving your power away to others. Alternatively, an overactive solar plexus shows up as controlling behavior, anger, or aggression.
How to balance it:
- Movement: Core-strengthening exercises, twists, vigorous walking, martial arts
- Food: Yellow foods (bananas, ginger, turmeric, lemon), whole grains, warm cooked meals
- Sound: Chanting “RAM,” fire-crackling sounds
- Crystals: Citrine, tiger’s eye, yellow jasper
- Practice: Make a decision you’ve been avoiding. Set one boundary. Complete one task you’ve been procrastinating on. Action feeds this center.
4. Heart Chakra (Anahata)
Location: Center of chest Governs: Love, compassion, connection, forgiveness, grief Color: Green (sometimes pink) Element: Air
The heart chakra sits at the midpoint of the seven centers — bridging the physical lower chakras with the spiritual upper ones. It governs your capacity to love and be loved, including self-love.
When balanced: You give and receive love freely. You forgive without being a doormat. You feel compassion for others and yourself. Grief moves through you rather than calcifying.
Signs of blockage: Difficulty trusting people. Guarded, walled off emotionally. Holding grudges. Codependency (loving others at the expense of yourself). Chest tightness, heart palpitations, respiratory issues, upper back tension.
How to balance it:
- Movement: Chest openers, backbends, arms-wide stretches, deep breathing
- Food: Green foods (leafy greens, broccoli, kiwi, green tea), raw vegetables
- Sound: Chanting “YAM,” heart-opening music, singing
- Crystals: Rose quartz, green aventurine, rhodonite
- Practice: Loving-kindness meditation. Write an unsent letter of forgiveness (to someone else or yourself). Hug someone. Let yourself cry if tears come.
5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)
Location: Throat Governs: Communication, self-expression, truth, listening Color: Blue Element: Ether (space)
The throat chakra is about expressing what’s true for you and hearing what’s true for others. It connects inner experience to outward expression.
When balanced: You speak honestly without cruelty. You express needs clearly. You listen well. Your creative voice comes through in your work.
Signs of blockage: Difficulty speaking up. Swallowing your words. Sore throats, thyroid issues, neck tension, jaw clenching. On the overactive side: talking too much, interrupting, being unable to listen, saying things you regret.
How to balance it:
- Movement: Neck rolls, shoulder shrugs, lion’s breath (exhale forcefully with tongue out)
- Food: Blue foods (blueberries), soups, herbal teas, honey
- Sound: Chanting “HAM,” singing (even badly), humming, reading aloud
- Crystals: Lapis lazuli, blue lace agate, aquamarine
- Practice: Journal. Say something you’ve been holding back. Sing in the car. If overactive, practice listening without forming your response.
6. Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)
Location: Between the eyebrows Governs: Intuition, insight, imagination, mental clarity Color: Indigo Element: Light
The third eye is your center of perception beyond the physical senses. It governs intuition, pattern recognition, and the ability to see the bigger picture.
When balanced: You trust your instincts. You see situations clearly without being clouded by fear or desire. You have a strong inner compass. Concentration comes easily.
Signs of blockage: Inability to trust your intuition. Feeling disconnected from meaning or purpose. Headaches, eye strain, insomnia, brain fog. Overthinking. Alternatively, an overactive third eye can show up as being ungrounded, lost in fantasy, or disconnected from practical reality.
How to balance it:
- Movement: Child’s pose (forehead on the ground), eye exercises, inversions
- Food: Purple foods (grapes, eggplant, purple cabbage), dark chocolate, omega-3 rich foods
- Sound: Chanting “OM,” silence, binaural beats
- Crystals: Amethyst, sodalite, labradorite
- Practice: Meditation (the single most effective third eye practice). Reduce screen time. Pay attention to dreams. When you get a “gut feeling,” follow it and see what happens.
7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara)
Location: Top of the head Governs: Spiritual connection, universal consciousness, wisdom, transcendence Color: Violet or white Element: Thought / pure consciousness
The crown chakra connects individual awareness to something larger. This doesn’t require religious belief — it’s the experience of awe, of interconnection, of knowing that your awareness extends beyond your personal story.
When balanced: You feel connected to life. You have a sense of purpose. You can hold paradox and uncertainty without needing everything resolved. You experience moments of peace that aren’t dependent on circumstances.
Signs of blockage: Feeling spiritually disconnected or cynical. Existential despair. Excessive materialism as a way to fill inner emptiness. Alternatively, an overactive crown can show up as spiritual bypassing — using spiritual concepts to avoid dealing with real-world problems.
How to balance it:
- Movement: Meditation, headstands (if practiced safely), savasana
- Food: Fasting or very light eating (the crown responds to lightness), purple grapes, figs
- Sound: Silence, “OM,” high-frequency singing bowls
- Crystals: Clear quartz, selenite, amethyst
- Practice: Spend time in awe-inspiring settings. Meditate daily. Study something that challenges your worldview. Serve others without expectation.
How to Work with This Map
You don’t need to overhaul your entire energy system. Pick the one or two chakras that clearly relate to what you’re struggling with right now. Spend a few weeks focusing on those centers using the tools listed above.
The body tells you where the blockages are. Chronic tension in your throat? Throat chakra. Constant digestive issues that don’t have a clear medical cause? Solar plexus. Difficulty feeling safe no matter how stable your life is? Root.
Trust the physical signals. They’re the most honest feedback system you have.
