How to Cleanse Crystals: 8 Methods Ranked by Safety and Effectiveness

Clear the Energy, Keep the Stone Intact

Run your crystal under cool water for 30-60 seconds while setting the intention that accumulated energy washes away. That’s the simplest cleanse — and for most stones, it works.

But not every crystal can handle water. And not every situation calls for the same method. Here are eight ways to cleanse crystals, ranked from most universally safe to most specialized, with clear guidance on which stones need which approach.

Why Crystals Need Cleansing

Crystals absorb energy from their environment — from the people who handle them, the spaces they sit in, and the work they’re used for. Over time, this accumulated energy dulls the stone’s natural resonance. A crystal that once felt vibrant starts to feel flat or heavy.

Cleansing resets the stone to its baseline. Think of it as clearing a whiteboard so fresh writing shows clearly again.

The 8 Methods

1. Sound (Safest, Fastest)

How: Hold a singing bowl, tuning fork, or bell near your crystals. Let the vibration wash over them for 30-60 seconds. You can also use chanting, drums, or a phone app playing a sustained tone at 528 Hz.

Why it works: Sound waves disrupt stagnant energy patterns. The vibration passes through the crystal’s structure and resets its frequency.

Best for: Every crystal, without exception. Sound never damages any stone. Use this when you need to cleanse a large collection at once.

Time needed: Under 1 minute.

2. Smoke (Sage, Palo Santo, Incense)

How: Light your sage bundle, palo santo stick, or incense. Pass the crystal through the smoke for 30-60 seconds, or hold the stone while wafting smoke around it.

Why it works: Smoke cleansing is one of the oldest purification practices across cultures. The smoke carries stagnant energy away from the stone.

Best for: All crystals. Particularly effective after emotional or healing work.

Time needed: 1-2 minutes.

Note: Use in a ventilated space. Source sage and palo santo from sustainable, ethical suppliers.

3. Selenite or Clear Quartz Charging

How: Place the crystal on top of a selenite slab, inside a selenite bowl, or beside a large clear quartz cluster. Leave for 4-24 hours.

Why it works: Selenite and clear quartz are self-cleansing stones that generate a clearing field. Other crystals placed near them shed accumulated energy without any intervention from you.

Best for: Daily maintenance and overnight recharging. Ideal for water-sensitive stones.

Time needed: 4-24 hours (passive — no effort after setup).

4. Running Water

How: Hold the crystal under cool running water — a faucet works, a stream is better. 30-60 seconds while visualizing the water carrying away accumulated energy.

Why it works: Water is a universal cleanser. The movement dissolves energetic residue.

Best for: Hard, non-porous stones like quartz, amethyst, jasper, agate, and obsidian.

Not safe for: Selenite (dissolves), malachite (toxic copper release), pyrite (rusts), hematite (rusts), lepidolite (flakes apart), fluorite (cracks), kyanite (splits along planes), desert rose (disintegrates), turquoise (changes color).

Quick safety rule: If it ends in “-ite,” check before submerging. If it’s a Mohs hardness below 6, skip water.

Time needed: 1 minute.

5. Moonlight

How: Place crystals outside or on a windowsill at dusk. Retrieve them by mid-morning. Full moon is strongest, but any moon phase works.

Why it works: Moonlight carries a soft, receptive energy that clears and recharges simultaneously. The lunar cycle has been linked to cleansing rituals across traditions for millennia.

Best for: All crystals. Especially effective for intuition-related stones like moonstone, labradorite, and amethyst.

Time needed: Overnight (passive).

Tip: Even cloudy nights work. The moon’s energy penetrates cloud cover.

6. Earth Burial

How: Bury the crystal in soil — garden soil, a plant pot, or a specific spot that feels right. Mark the location. Leave for 24 hours to 3 days.

Why it works: Earth is where crystals formed. Returning them to soil reconnects them to their source and draws out accumulated energy.

Best for: Deeply depleted stones or crystals used in intense healing work. Grounding stones like black tourmaline and smoky quartz respond especially well.

Not safe for: Soft or porous stones that absorb moisture from soil (selenite, malachite, turquoise, opal).

Time needed: 24 hours to 3 days.

7. Sunlight (Use with Caution)

How: Place crystals in direct sunlight for 15-30 minutes. No longer.

Why it works: Sunlight is energizing and purifying. A brief exposure burns off stagnant energy.

Best for: Sun-affiliated stones like citrine, sunstone, and carnelian — though even these don’t need prolonged exposure.

Fades in sunlight: Amethyst, rose quartz, citrine (irradiated varieties), fluorite, smoky quartz, celestite, aquamarine, kunzite. Extended sun exposure degrades color permanently.

Time needed: 15-30 minutes maximum.

8. Salt

How: Place crystals on a bed of sea salt or Himalayan pink salt for several hours. Do not use salt water — the combination is more corrosive than dry salt.

Why it works: Salt is a powerful purifier across nearly every spiritual tradition. It draws out negative energy aggressively.

Best for: Heavily loaded stones that need deep clearing. Hard, smooth stones only.

Not safe for: Anything porous, soft, or metallic. Salt scratches polished surfaces and corrodes metal inclusions. Avoid with opal, turquoise, malachite, pyrite, and hematite.

Time needed: 2-8 hours.

How Often to Cleanse

After every healing session. Non-negotiable if you use crystals in energy work, meditation, or laying on the body.

Weekly for crystals that sit in a room passively — on your desk, nightstand, or altar.

Immediately after someone else handles your stones, after an argument or stressful event nearby, after illness in the home, or when you bring a new crystal home for the first time.

Daily maintenance: Keep crystals on or near selenite. This provides passive clearing that extends the time between deeper cleanses.

A Simple Cleansing Routine

Start here:

  1. When you bring a crystal home, cleanse it with smoke or sound before using it
  2. Place it on selenite overnight for charging
  3. Cleanse weekly with your preferred method
  4. Do a deep cleanse (earth burial or extended moonlight) monthly or after intense use

The method matters less than the consistency. A crystal cleansed regularly with smoke works better than one given a perfect full-moon ritual once a year.
