How to calculate your life path number

Your life path number is the most significant number in numerology. Derived from your complete birth date, it reveals your core traits, natural talents, key challenges, and the central theme of your life journey.

Calculating it takes about sixty seconds. Here is exactly how to do it.

The basic method

Add all the digits of your birth date together, then reduce to a single digit (or master number).

Example: November 29, 1990

  1. Write the date numerically: 11/29/1990
  2. Add each digit: 1+1+2+9+1+9+9+0 = 32
  3. Reduce to single digit: 3+2 = 5

Life path: 5

That is the quick method. But there is a more accurate approach that preserves master numbers.

The preferred method (reduces each part separately)

To catch master numbers (11, 22, 33), reduce the month, day, and year separately before combining.

Example: November 29, 1990

  1. Month: November = 11 (master number, do not reduce)
  2. Day: 29 = 2+9 = 11 (master number, do not reduce)
  3. Year: 1990 = 1+9+9+0 = 19 = 1+9 = 10 = 1+0 = 1
  4. Add together: 11 + 11 + 1 = 23
  5. Reduce: 2+3 = 5

Life path: 5

In this case, both methods give the same answer. But the second method reveals that this person has two master numbers feeding into their life path, which adds significance.

Master numbers: when not to reduce

If at any stage you get 11, 22, or 33, stop reducing. These are master numbers with special significance.

Example: February 22, 1986

  1. Month: February = 2
  2. Day: 22 (master number, keep as is)
  3. Year: 1986 = 1+9+8+6 = 24 = 2+4 = 6
  4. Add together: 2 + 22 + 6 = 30
  5. Reduce: 3+0 = 3

Life path: 3 (with a 22 influence from the birth day)

Example: December 12, 1975

  1. Month: December = 12 = 1+2 = 3
  2. Day: 12 = 1+2 = 3
  3. Year: 1975 = 1+9+7+5 = 22 (master number, keep)
  4. Add together: 3 + 3 + 22 = 28
  5. Reduce: 2+8 = 10 = 1+0 = 1

Life path: 1

Example (resulting in master number): November 11, 1992

  1. Month: November = 11 (keep)
  2. Day: 11 (keep)
  3. Year: 1992 = 1+9+9+2 = 21 = 2+1 = 3
  4. Add together: 11 + 11 + 3 = 25
  5. Reduce: 2+5 = 7

Life path: 7

Example (life path master number): August 28, 1969

  1. Month: August = 8
  2. Day: 28 = 2+8 = 10 = 1+0 = 1
  3. Year: 1969 = 1+9+6+9 = 25 = 2+5 = 7
  4. Add together: 8 + 1 + 7 = 16
  5. Reduce: 1+6 = 7

Life path: 7

Example (life path 11): January 19, 1990

  1. Month: January = 1
  2. Day: 19 = 1+9 = 10 = 1+0 = 1
  3. Year: 1990 = 1+9+9+0 = 19 = 1+9 = 10 = 1+0 = 1
  4. Add together: 1 + 1 + 1 = 3…

Wait, that does not give 11. Let me show a true life path 11:

Example (life path 11): February 9, 1990

  1. Month: February = 2
  2. Day: 9
  3. Year: 1990 = 1+9+9+0 = 19 = 1+9 = 10 = 1+0 = 1
  4. Add together: 2 + 9 + 1 = 12… still not 11.

Example (actual life path 11): November 9, 1973

  1. Month: November = 11 (keep)
  2. Day: 9
  3. Year: 1973 = 1+9+7+3 = 20 = 2+0 = 2
  4. Add together: 11 + 9 + 2 = 22 (keep as master number)
  5. Life path: 22/4 (master number 22, expressed as life path 4)

In this case, the person has life path 22/4 — a master builder number.

Common calculation mistakes

Mistake 1: Reducing master numbers too early Keep 11, 22, and 33 intact when they appear. Only reduce if the final sum is not a master number.

Mistake 2: Using the wrong year format Always use the full four-digit year. “90” instead of “1990” gives incorrect results.

Mistake 3: Adding month and day together before year Reduce month, day, and year separately first, then add them together. This preserves master numbers accurately.

Mistake 4: Confusing life path with birth day number Your birth day number (just the day you were born, reduced) is different from your life path. Someone born on the 15th has birth day 6 (1+5), but their life path requires the full date calculation.

What to do with your number

Knowing your life path number is a starting point, not a destination.

Recognize your strengths. Your life path highlights natural talents. A life path 3 should embrace creative expression; a life path 4 should trust their ability to build solid foundations.

Acknowledge your challenges. Each number has shadow aspects. A life path 1 may need to work on collaboration; a life path 2 may need to practice assertiveness.

Understand compatibility. Certain life paths harmonize naturally. Life paths 1 and 5 share independence; life paths 2 and 6 share nurturing energy. This applies to friendships, partnerships, and work relationships.

Track personal years. Beyond your fixed life path, you move through a nine-year cycle of personal years. Calculating your current personal year (add your birth month and day to the current year, reduce) reveals the energy available to you now.

Your life path number is one tool among many for self-understanding. Use it as a mirror, not a cage.
