YAM
Seed Sound of the Air Element
About This Mantra
YAM is the bija mantra of Anahata, the heart chakra at the center of the chest. This sound activates the air element (vayu) within the body, governing the breath, the circulation of prana, the capacity to give and receive, and the emotional openness that allows genuine love and compassion to flow. Anahata means 'unstruck' -- the sound that arises not from impact but from the vibration of consciousness itself.
How to Chant
Sit with the spine erect and the chest naturally open -- not puffed out, but not collapsed. Place one or both palms on the center of the chest if desired. Inhale deeply, feeling the rib cage expand in all directions. On the exhalation, chant YAM, directing the vibration into the heart space.
Pronunciation Guide
The 'Y' glides into the open 'A' without interruption. The 'A' is open and sustained, filling the chest cavity with vibration. The 'M' is a gentle, extended nasal hum directed at the heart center.
Benefits
Opens the heart to giving and receiving love. Heals emotional wounds, grief, and the armoring that develops around a broken heart. Improves respiratory function and deepens the breath.
Graha Connection
Venus (Shukra) and Moon (Chandra). Venus governs love, beauty, and harmonious relationship -- all heart center functions.
