Om Bhaskaraya Vidmahe, Divakaraya Dhimahi, Tanno Surya Prachodayat
We know the Light-Maker, we meditate upon the Day-Maker; may the Sun inspire us
About This Mantra
The Surya Gayatri is a solar invocation that applies the Gayatri format specifically to Surya's qualities of vitality, authority, clarity, and the life-giving energy that sustains all beings. While the original Gayatri mantra (Rigveda 3.62.10) is also addressed to the solar deity Savitri, this Surya Gayatri uses different solar names -- Bhaskara (light-maker) and Divakara (day-maker) -- emphasizing the practical, health-giving, and energizing aspects of solar energy rather than the contemplative, illuminating quality of the original. This mantra is the primary vitality practice for those who need to rebuild physical energy, strengthen confidence, or restore the radiant quality that a healthy person naturally emanates.
How to Chant
Face the rising sun if possible. Chant during Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) practice, dedicating one repetition to each round of the physical sequence. Alternatively, sit in a sunny spot with eyes closed, feeling the warmth on the face while chanting. The mantra can be enhanced by drinking sun-charged water (water left in a clear glass container in sunlight for several hours).
