Silence (Visarga / AH)
The Sound Beyond Sound
About This Mantra
The Sahasrara (crown chakra) is traditionally associated not with a bija mantra but with silence -- the cessation of sound that paradoxically contains all sounds. Some traditions assign the visarga (AH) or the full AUM to Sahasrara, but the most classical instruction is that the crown chakra opens not through chanting but through the silence that follows all chanting. After LAM, VAM, RAM, YAM, HAM, and OM have activated and purified the six lower chakras, the practitioner rests in the silence at the crown, allowing consciousness to recognize its own limitless nature.
How to Chant
After completing the bija mantra sequence from LAM through OM, bring awareness to the crown of the head -- the fontanelle, the soft spot that was open at birth. Do not chant anything. Simply rest awareness at this point and observe. The silence may have a quality of its own -- a high-pitched inner ringing, a sense of spaciousness, a subtle pressure or tingling at the crown.
Pronunciation Guide
There is no pronunciation in the conventional sense. Some traditions use 'AH' -- a completely open, unimpeded sound representing pure opening -- as a transitional practice. Others use 'OM' held until it naturally dissolves into silence.
Benefits
Opens the practitioner to states of consciousness beyond the ordinary -- unity, bliss, spaciousness, and the direct perception of the sacred. Reduces existential anxiety by connecting individual awareness to its infinite source. Provides the deepest possible rest for the nervous system.
Graha Connection
Jupiter (Guru) and Ketu. Jupiter represents the grace and expanded consciousness associated with Sahasrara.
