About This Mantra

Om Vakratundaya Hum is the most concise and powerful obstacle-removing mantra of Ganesha, the elephant-headed lord who clears all impediments from the sincere seeker's path. 'Vakratunda' means 'curved trunk' -- Ganesha's most distinctive physical feature, which represents the Om symbol in visual form. The curved trunk also symbolizes the flexibility and adaptability needed to navigate around obstacles when direct confrontation fails.

How to Chant

Chant with determination and focused intention on the specific obstacle to be removed. This is not a mantra for vague requests; it works best when directed at a clearly identified impediment. Visualize Ganesha's trunk sweeping the obstacle aside or Ganesha himself walking through it. Orange or red flowers and the offering of modaka (sweets) honor Ganesha.

Pronunciation Guide

Ohm Vah-krah-toon-dah-yah Hoom. 'Vakratundaya' is five syllables with the emphasis on the third (tun). 'Hum' is pronounced with force, rhyming with 'room.'

Benefits

Removes specific, identified obstacles from any endeavor. Provides the clarity to distinguish between obstacles to overcome and obstacles to accept. Builds confidence and decisiveness.

Graha Connection

Ketu and Mars (Mangal). Ketu represents Ganesha's severed-and-restored head (the wisdom gained through radical transformation), while Mars provides the fierce energy of the 'Hum' that cuts through resistance.
