OM (AUM)
Seed Sound of Mind/Light
About This Mantra
OM serves as the bija mantra of Ajna, the third eye chakra located between and slightly above the eyebrows. While Om is also the universal primordial sound (described in entry #1), when directed specifically at Ajna during chakra practice, it activates the faculty of inner vision, intuition, and the discriminative intelligence (viveka) that perceives truth beyond sensory data. At this level, the five gross elements have been transcended, and the element associated with Ajna is light, mind, or mahat -- the cosmic intelligence from which individual intellect derives.
How to Chant
Sit in meditation posture with the eyes closed. Direct the inner gaze upward to the point between the eyebrows (shambhavi mudra) without straining. Inhale deeply, and on the exhalation, chant OM with sustained awareness at the brow point. The 'M' portion should be held as long as possible, with the vibration concentrated at Ajna.
Pronunciation Guide
Ohm or Ah-Oo-Mm. When used as an Ajna bija, the emphasis shifts toward the upper registers of the sound -- the 'M' and the silence that follows. Let the 'A' and 'U' pass through quickly, and sustain the 'M' with focused attention at the brow point.
Benefits
Develops intuition and inner vision. Sharpens concentration and the capacity for sustained attention. Harmonizes the two hemispheres of the brain.
Graha Connection
Saturn (Shani) and Ketu. Saturn provides the discipline and unflinching clarity that Ajna requires.
