Om Suryaya Namaha
Salutations to the Sun
About This Mantra
Om Suryaya Namaha is the bija-yukta (seed-bearing) mantra of Surya, the solar deity who represents the atma (soul), vitality, authority, and the light of consciousness in Jyotish. Surya is the king of the navagraha, the nine celestial bodies, and his placement in the birth chart reveals the core of a person's identity -- their dharma, their father, their relationship with authority, and their capacity to shine from their own center. In Ayurveda, Surya governs Pitta dosha, the metabolic fire that transforms food into energy and experience into understanding.
How to Chant
Face the rising sun if possible, ideally during Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) practice. Each repetition can accompany one round of the physical sequence, or the mantra can be chanted seated as a standalone practice. When chanting for Jyotish remedial purposes (to strengthen a weak natal Sun), consistency matters more than duration -- 108 repetitions daily for 40 consecutive days is the standard prescription.
Pronunciation Guide
Ohm Soor-yah-yah Nah-mah-hah. 'Surya' has two syllables -- Soor-yah -- with the emphasis on the first. The final 'Namaha' is three syllables with equal weight on each.
Benefits
Strengthens vitality, immune function, and metabolic fire. Builds confidence, leadership capacity, and clarity of purpose. Improves eye health and cardiac function.
Graha Connection
This is the primary Surya mantra, used to strengthen a weak or afflicted Sun in the birth chart. Indications include: low self-esteem, father issues, difficulty with authority, weak digestion, poor eyesight, heart problems, lack of direction or purpose, and Sun in debilitation (Libra) or combust.
