Om Chandraya Namaha
Salutations to the Moon
About This Mantra
Om Chandraya Namaha invokes Chandra, the lunar deity who governs the mind (manas), emotions, mother, nurturing, and the capacity to receive and reflect. While Surya represents the atma (soul), Chandra represents the manas (mind) -- the reflective, fluctuating surface through which the soul experiences the world. In Jyotish, the Moon's placement is considered as important as the ascendant, determining emotional temperament, mental stability, and the quality of one's inner life.
How to Chant
Sit facing the moon if possible, particularly during full moon. White clothing and white flowers enhance the practice. Chant in a soft, melodious voice -- lunar mantras benefit from gentleness rather than force. A crystal or pearl mala is traditionally used for Chandra mantras.
Pronunciation Guide
Ohm Chahn-drah-yah Nah-mah-hah. 'Chandra' is two syllables -- Chahn-drah -- with a soft 'ch' (as in 'church') and the stress on the first syllable.
Benefits
Calms the mind and reduces anxiety, insomnia, and emotional reactivity. Strengthens ojas and immunity. Improves hormonal balance and fluid regulation in the body.
Graha Connection
Primary lunar remedy. Indications include: anxiety, depression, emotional instability, insomnia, mother issues, hormonal imbalances, weak immunity (depleted ojas), Moon in debilitation (Scorpio), or Moon afflicted by malefic planets (Saturn, Rahu, Ketu).
