LAM
Seed Sound of the Earth Element
About This Mantra
LAM is the bija (seed) mantra of Muladhara, the root chakra located at the base of the spine. As the foundational sound of the chakra system, LAM activates the earth element (prithvi) within the body, strengthening the connection between consciousness and physical form. The vibration of LAM is dense, low, and stabilizing -- when chanted correctly, it can be felt as a deep resonance in the pelvic floor and lower spine.
How to Chant
Sit in a grounded posture -- Sukhasana (cross-legged) or Vajrasana (kneeling) -- with the spine erect and the sitting bones making firm contact with the floor or cushion. Bring awareness to the perineum, the physical location of Muladhara. Inhale deeply, and on the exhalation, chant LAM, directing the vibration to the base of the spine. Visualize a deep red light glowing at this point, becoming brighter with each repetition.
Pronunciation Guide
The 'L' is dental -- the tongue touches just behind the upper teeth. The 'A' is open, like the 'a' in 'father.' The 'M' is a sustained nasal hum that should be felt vibrating in the skull and then descending to the base of the spine. Hold the 'M' for as long as the breath allows, directing awareness downward.
Benefits
Grounds scattered or anxious energy. Strengthens the immune system and physical vitality. Supports bone health and the structural integrity of the body.
Graha Connection
Mars (Mangal) and Saturn (Shani). Mars governs the physical vitality and survival instinct seated at Muladhara.
