HAM
Seed Sound of the Ether Element
About This Mantra
HAM is the bija mantra of Vishuddha, the throat chakra that governs communication, self-expression, truth-telling, and purification. This sound activates the ether/space element (akasha), the subtlest and most pervasive of the five elements -- the element through which all sound travels and within which all other elements exist. Vishuddha means 'especially pure,' indicating that this chakra functions as a filter, refining raw thought and feeling into articulate, truthful expression.
How to Chant
Sit upright with the chin slightly tucked (a gentle jalandhara bandha). Bring awareness to the hollow of the throat. Inhale deeply, and on the exhalation, chant HAM with attention to the quality of the sound itself -- let the vibration fill the entire throat and neck region. Visualize a luminous sky-blue light at the throat, clear and boundless.
Pronunciation Guide
The 'H' is a soft, breathy exhalation -- not a hard, guttural sound. The 'A' opens the throat fully. The 'M' is an extended nasal hum directed at the throat.
Benefits
Clears the throat and improves vocal quality. Supports thyroid function and hormonal balance. Develops clear, authentic communication skills.
Graha Connection
Mercury (Budha) and Jupiter (Guru). Mercury governs the mechanics of communication.
